<< Dante is not just a visionary and a writer. He is also a sculptor.. >>-Auguste Rodin [1]

List of Images and Poems:

SERIE 1

NARCISISM

I'm BEAUTIFUL!
(.....)

From a sculptural dream I have the rare beauty,
And my breast, — garden where I cultivate pain,
It awakens in the Poet a lively and intense love,
With the eternal muteness of Carrara marble.

REALITY !
(.....)

O my muse then! what have you, my love?
How discolored you are! in your dark gaze
Flashes of madness and terror pass;
A cold sweat runs through your epidermis in fire.

(.....)

FUGIT AMOR !
(.....)

Since today, you are no longer, O living matter,
Than granite shrouded in unconscious terror.
Emerging from a shifting, misty Saarah!
Old sphinx who sleeps a mysterious sleep,
Forgotten, ignored, and whose cold face
It only shines when the sun says good night to the day!

SERIE 2 TEMPTATION

DUALITY !
(.....)

The protruding chest, the distended lungs
Like the stiff canopy of a ship,
Intent to unravel the hidden realms
Under cover of the dark and cold night;

CESSION!
(.....)

I feel all the commotions vibrate in me
From a ship that plows the vast sea;
Temporal rains, cyclones, convulsions

THE FALL!
(.....)

A joyful dead will be delivered to you,
Who freely seeks darkness, decay!

Without mercy, undermine my impure flesh,
And tell me later if there is torture
That my heart has not suffered!

SERIE 3 LUST

SEDUCTION !
(.....)

With the scents of myrrh and incense, I will, enraptured
In the amber liqueur of pilgrim wines,
Raise me a pedestal, make me revered,
Usurping the place of the divine tabernacles.

DESIRE !
(.....)

And when I get tired of these godless farces,
I will lay my slender hand on your chest,
And my ring fingers, like harpy claws
They will tear his flesh to the heart.

SURRENDER !
(.....)

I know suffering is the supreme nobility,
Only distinction that has value today
And I know that, deserving a mystic diadem,
Only the Universe and Time will impose it on me.
(...)
The diadem I target is pure effulgent,
Every light effect of the times that have gone by,
This pristine light before which we
See that mortal eyes live in darkness!"

The Concept:

Did you know that the first underwater photograph (between 1856 and 1866 [2] ) took place shortly after the first terrestrial photograph (1822, by Niépce).

As mentioned in the book Auguste Rodin - Sculptures and Drawings, by Taschen, by Gilles Néret:

The main objective is to move, love, wait, vibrate, live.

It is intended through Sensuality and Pessimism to express Despair and waiting for Death...

The presentation of some photographic essays led to an observation by one of the colleagues: some images were reminiscent of sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

This observation led the author to delve into a research of sculptors and painters, starting with Bernini, passing by others like Antonio Canova, ending up focusing on Auguste Rodin, his personality and works, which led him to research the work of the Sistine Chapel by Miguel Ângelo and the poems of Flores do Mal by the poet Charles Baudelaire, which were the basis of some works by Rodin, in particular Porta do Inferno, based on Dante's Divine Comedy, to refer to:

<<Dante is not just a visionary and a writer. He is also a sculptor. >>

Baudelaire's influence on Rodin's works was the author's last step to finalize the concept of this work, which led to the association of 9 images with extracts from poems from Baudelaire's "LEs Fleures du Mal" work.

Thus, similarly to some of Rodin's works, this project also has a strong Baudelairean influence.

The Poses

Rodin confides to Bourdelle:

<< My liberation from academia was made through Miguel Ângelo who, by teaching me (through observation of the works) diametrically opposed rules to those I had learned (Ingres school), freed me... It was he who extended me your mighty hand. It was this bridge that I passed from one circle to another... >> [1]

<< From then onwards, he launched his works, not allowing his models to adopt academic poses, but to effectively circulate around the Atelier. >> [1]

[1] NÉRET Gilles, Auguste RODIN - Sculptures and Drawings, Lisbon, ISBN 3-8228-9025-1 P, Taschen / Publications and Graphic Arts, Lda, 1997.

By analogy, also in this work, poses were not required from the models. Only that they were inspired by the various images of sculptures and paintings. They were issued all at once so as not to limit the natural sensuality that models could demonstrate during short periods of apnea. The author, free in the 3 dimensions, by intuition, inspiration and passion, selected the angles of view that most satisfied him for the work he was pretending to be.
